How Much Fabric Do You Need for a Chair?

It depends on the chair. A dining chair seat pad needs just 1–2 yards. An armchair needs 6–9 yards. A wingback chair needs 7–10 yards. All in 54-inch fabric.

Dining Chairs: The Beginner Project

Dining chair seat pads are the easiest upholstery project. The seat lifts out, you staple new fabric over the existing padding, and put it back. One yard of 54-inch fabric is enough for most dining chairs — you can often get two seat covers from a single yard if the seats are small.

For a set of 6 dining chairs, 4–5 yards of 54-inch fabric is usually sufficient. If your fabric has a directional pattern, buy 1 yard per chair to allow for pattern centring.

Armchairs and Club Chairs

A standard armchair has around 10–15 separate fabric pieces: inside back, outside back, seat, front panel, two inside arms, two outside arms, arm fronts, and cushion covers. Each piece must be cut with grain direction and, if patterned, with pattern alignment.

This is why an armchair uses 6–9 yards despite being much smaller than a sofa. The complexity of the shapes creates cutting waste that a sofa (with its larger, flatter panels) does not have proportionally.

Wingback Chairs

Wingback chairs need 7–10 yards because the wings add four extra pattern pieces (inside and outside of each wing). The wings also require careful pattern matching with the chair back, which increases waste.

Tufted wingback chairs can push yardage to 12+ yards because the tufting pulls fabric into each button, requiring extra length in the inside back panel.
