Fabric Width Guide

Fabric width is the most overlooked variable in yardage calculations. Switching from 54-inch to 45-inch fabric increases your yardage by 20%. Switching to 36-inch increases it by 50%.

Fabric width changes yardage more than most people expect, especially on larger projects. This guide explains standard widths, where they are used, and how width shifts your final order quantity. You can use the examples here to compare bolts quickly before buying. With one width check, you can avoid ordering too little or paying for unnecessary extra.

Standard Fabric Widths

WidthMetricCommon Fabric Types
36"91 cmSpecialty cottons, some imported silks, vintage reproductions
44–45"112–114 cmQuilting cotton, dress fabrics, lining, muslin
54"137 cmUpholstery fabric, drapery, home decor cotton
58–60"147–152 cmApparel knits, wide wovens, outdoor fabric, some upholstery
108–118"274–300 cmQuilt backing, sheer curtain fabric

How Width Affects Yardage

Wider fabric lets more pattern pieces fit side by side in each row, reducing the total number of rows (length) you need. The relationship is roughly inversely proportional:

Yardage Adjustment = Standard Width ÷ Your Fabric Width

For a sofa needing 14 yards of 54-inch fabric:

Your WidthAdjustmentYardage NeededChange
36"54 ÷ 36 = 1.521 yd+50%
45"54 ÷ 45 = 1.216.8 yd+20%
54"1.014 ydBaseline
60"54 ÷ 60 = 0.912.6 yd-10%

Width Tips by Project Type

Upholstery

Always use 54-inch fabric if possible. It is the industry standard and gives the most efficient cuts for large furniture panels. Using 45-inch fabric for a sectional sofa can add 5+ extra yards.

Garments

Pattern envelopes list yardage for 45-inch and 60-inch fabric. If your fabric is 54 inches, use the 45-inch yardage as a safe estimate — you will have a little extra, which is fine.

Curtains

Fabric width determines how many panels you need per window. With 54-inch fabric and 2x fullness on a 60-inch window, you need 3 panels. With 108-inch sheer fabric, you may only need 1 panel.

Quilting

Quilting cotton is almost always 44–45 inches on the bolt, with about 42 inches usable after removing selvages. For backing, 108-inch wide-back fabric eliminates seaming.

Always Check the Bolt

Do not assume width — check the bolt label. Even within the same fabric type, widths can vary between manufacturers. Some online retailers list the width in the product description; some do not. If it is not listed, call and ask before ordering.
